North of Gainesville, the town of Alachua mixes newer residential growth with pine flatwoods and open farmland. Lot sizes here run larger than in the city, and a good share of the work is clearing rather than pruning.
Alachua's newer subdivisions were carved out of pine flatwoods, and it's common for a strip of slash pine to remain along the back property line. Those pines can lean or drop limbs onto a fence or shed after heavy rain saturates the sandy soil.
Many properties around Alachua sit on a half-acre or more, giving more room to work but also more canopy to manage — often a mix of pine, water oak and sweetgum that hasn't had regular maintenance.
